Climate Active to end 30 June 2027

Statement from EPD Australasia.

EPD Australasia notes that the Australian Government’s Climate Active Carbon Neutral Certification program is winding up on 30 June 2027.

Sunset on the hill with purple sky and orange sun flare.

The program allowed participants to:

  1. quantify greenhouse gas emissions using recognised standards
  2. implement emissions reduction measures and demonstrate continual improvement
  3. offset any remaining emissions using recognised carbon credits
  4. undergo independent verification or third-party assurance
  5. report publicly on emissions and climate actions.

Construction product EPDs published with EPD Australasia were able to provide a direct entry into the Climate Active program because the underlying standard (EN 15804) met Climate Active’s methodological requirements, AND EPD Australasia’s verification framework for construction product EPDs met or exceeded Climate Active’s verification requirements.

We encourage Australasian EPD owners with certified Climate Active carbon neutral products to participate in Climate Active’s consultation process within the timeframe (submissions are open until 18 September 2026); and to assess the impact that it will have for their products.

How EPDs support manufacturers beyond Climate Active

Several companies with EPDs registered with EPD Australasia took advantage of this direct entry and obtained Climate Active Carbon Neutral Product certification. Even without Climate Active, EPD Australasia’s EPDs allow Australia-based product manufacturers to:

  1. quantify greenhouse gas emissions using recognised standards, such as EN 15804
  2. implement emissions reduction measures and demonstrate continual improvement, as the underlying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides key insights into the drivers of emissions and opportunities for reduction
  3. offset any remaining emissions using recognised carbon credits (this part is now becoming less regulated, so manufacturers should be careful to select high-quality offsets)
  4. undergo independent verification; EPD Australasia’s verification framework (as developed within the International EPD System) is one of the most robust in the market
  5. report publicly on emissions and climate actions, as the EPDs report the carbon footprint of your product and can contain information regarding climate actions as additional environmental information.

Key demand drivers remain

The key demand drivers for verified embodied carbon footprint data for building and construction products remain:

  • the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) Green Star sustainable building certification scheme and its upfront carbon credit;
  • the Infrastructure Sustainability Councils (ISC) IS Rating Scheme; and
  • the NABERS Embodied Carbon Tool.

All these schemes accept EPDs registered with EPD Australasia as providing high quality verified embodied carbon footprint data. We understand that the GBCA, ISC, and NABERS will provide further information on the closure of Climate Active’s product carbon neutral certification.
