The concrete industry is investing heavily in EPDs as a way to benchmark their environmental impacts. In the past 3 months alone EPD Australasia has published 6 EPDs for businesses in this sector.
This brings the total number of Australasian EPDs in the “concrete and concrete elements” category to 23, demonstrating that this industry is serious about providing transparent, comparable data on their products life cycle environmental impact.
The embrace of EPDs spans the category with a wide range of businesses publishing EPDs. Holcim (Australia) published the first EPD in the category in March 2017 and have gone on to publish a total of 18 EPDs. Other companies in the sector were not far behind with Allied Concrete, Firth Industries, and Boral all publishing concrete EPDs.
More recently we have seen EPDs for concrete on specific building projects with Hymix, publishing an EPD for the Barangaroo R2 Tower and Hanson publishing for M-Park Stage 01 in Sydney. And there are many more EPDs expected from this sector in the next few months so watch this space!
In addition, companies producing cement (Holcim NZ, Golden Bay Cement) and reinforcement products (BarChip, Fibercon, Pacific Steel, Australian Reinforcing Company, InfraBuild Australia) have produced EPDs. This means that people undertaking infrastructure and building projects in Australia and New Zealand now have access to product specific environmental impact data for a comprehensive range of major material inputs to their projects.
