EPD Australasia

Three new verifiers approved

EPD Australasia has approved three new verifiers. There are now 18 approved verifiers and 2 accredited process certifiers who can undertake the necessary compliance checks of EPDs before publication.

New approved independent verifiers from left to right: Michael Zhu Jiang, Dr Thomas Gloria and Paul-Antoine Bontinck.

Michael Zhu Jiang currently serves as Global Head of Environmental Audits & Inspection at DQS AP LTD. He is an approved verifier for multiple EPD systems, a CCAA-certified GHG professional, and a lead auditor for ISO 14040/44, ISO 14067, ISCC EU/PLUS and ISO 50001. His extensive project portfolio covers steel, photovoltaic modules, energy storage batteries, automotive manufacturing, chemical engineering and biofuel industries. Michael holds a master’s degree in thermal power engineering and has more than 20 years of cross-industry expertise in carbon, energy and sustainability.

Dr Thomas Gloria has more than 30 years of professional experience in sustainability management consulting and information technology engineering design. He has performed more than 1,500 LCA and PCR reviews supporting more than 100,000 EPD publications. He is Managing Director of Industrial Ecology Consultants. In addition to being a recognised reviewer by EPD-Australasia, Thomas is also recognised by International EPD System (also as a tool reviewer), EPD North America, ASTM International, NSF International, SmartEPD, SCS Sustainability Consulting, National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA), and the CSA Group (formerly the Canadian Standards Association).

Among many other qualifications, he holds an American Center for LCA (ACLCA) accreditation as an LCA Certified Professional (granted in 2008) and was awarded the 2016 ACLCA Lifetime Individual LCA Leadership Award.

Based in Melbourne, Paul-Antoine Bontinck is an environmental engineer with 15 years of applied LCA experience across research, consulting and industry. As one of Lifecycles most senior technical experts, he has extensive experience in complex, large-scale modelling. His Master of Environmental Engineering and rigorous analytical approach support the delivery of projects across a range of industries.

In 2021, Paul-Antoine published an update to the water scarcity model used to represent the effect of water consumption on Australian freshwater resources in the International Journal of LCA. The water scarcity factors developed in that publication have since been used by LCA practitioners across Australia to model the effects of water consumption on local freshwater resources.

More recently, Paul-Antoine has been applying his expertise to the development and publication of EPDs, while continuing to work on other Life Cycle Assessment projects across a broad range of industries.

About our approved verifiers

Independent verification and process certification are a critical part of EPD development. The approved verifiers and accredited certification bodies must demonstrate expertise in life cycle assessment (LCA) and critical review of LCA studies. These specialists are drawn from Australia and New Zealand, as well as an international network of experienced LCA practitioners, and are approved based on strict competency requirements defined in the Programme’s General Programme Instructions. Their role ensures that every Australasian EPD consistently meets technical standards and maintains the transparency and credibility on which our programme is built.
