ISO 14025:2026: Updated requirements for EPD programmes

Core EPD Programme and EPD standard updated

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially published the updated ISO 14025:2026 standard. This core standard establishes the principles and procedures for EPD programmes and independently verified life cycle assessment (LCA)-based environmental declarations.

The update is the most comprehensive revision since its original publication in 2006 and introduces several changes that all EPD programmes worldwide will need to implement. Among the most significant changes are:

1. Updated terminology - EPDs are now clearly defined as independently verified LCA-based environmental statements, removing the “Type I, Type II, Type III” classification language.
2. New normative references to strengthen harmonisation between EPD programmes.
3. Introduction of new terminology and requirements for EPD tools, including the independent verification process of EPD tools.
4. Stronger emphasis on independence, impartiality, and conflict-of-interest throughout different processes within EPD programmes.

EPD International AB and EPD Australasia actively support the implementation of stricter requirements for quality, harmonisation, digitalisation, and impartiality – key principles that are deeply embedded in the International EPD System. As a result of EPD International AB’s involvement during the revision, our General Programme Instructions (GPI) v5.0.1 are already closely aligned with this revised ISO 14025:2026 standard.
